In a series of design charrettes we will create a dialogue with the carbon offset community around how to fill the “charismatic carbon” gap. Since one of the major attacks on current carbon standards, such as the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS), is that they ignore the needs of a large pool of potential offset sellers - social entrepreneurs - we have decided to change the balance of power. While CDM and VCS were the result of thoroughly democratic processes - they have ultimately failed to address the wants and needs of many. As a result, our design charrettes will bring together both the mainstream and the fringe elements of the carbon community, including:
- Social entrepreneurs unhappy with current carbon standards
- Potential investors looking for more satisfactory carbon offsets
- Buyers, both individual and institutional, looking for more impact (after all, they are who the offsets are designed for!)
- Aggregators, traders and carbon offset officials with a deep knowledge of current carbon market trends
The unifying thread of the charrettes is that there is a role for Charismatic and high impact carbon offsets to play in the world markets - and we get to decide what the future looks like.
The charrettes are planned for late spring, 2008, and will be decidedly un-conference in style. Please write felix (at) carbonforgood (dot) com for more information, or to be put on the early invite list.
